Water Scorpion (Ranatra sp.)

Water Scorpion (Ranatra) among Dragonfly Nymphs and freshwater Ghost Shrimp

Water Scorpion (Ranatra sp.) is a true bug (Hemiptera) and an aquatic predator.  An air-breather, it can withstand water with low dissolved oxygen and high temperatures.  Water Scorpions cling to vegetation near the surface, waiting to ambush a moving prey item such as a shrimp or insect nymph.  Water scorpions require no special permits to keep and are interesting bugs for pets and for the classroom.  Water Scorpions are $8 each, plus shipping.
